I have been searching for a series of books I read as a kid ever since the Chronicles of Narnia came out a few years ago, as I was so very confused with what that movie was about. I was convinced that the move would be about this other series of books, unfortunately all I could remember about them were a) I really liked them at the time, and b) there was something about a seventh son of a seventh son and a wood ornament, not so much cats and closets.
Well, thanks to my friends at google, I know now that it was the “Dark Is Rising” series by Susan Cooper. I am thinking of getting my library card and checking them out if the Dexter Library has them available.
(Side note, apparently a film was made (called “The Seeker”?) from the second book, but no one liked it and it wasn’t very close to the book. So if you saw that and are judging me, the books should be much better.)

Jenna, Dustin, Metta, and I went to see “There Will Be Blood” last night. It was all sorts of awesome, and I highly recommend it (note the movie is almost three hours long though, so you have to be in the right mood/rent it when it comes out). The basic story is about an oil man (Daniel Day-Lewis) in Texas in the early 20th century, who has the best quote ever near the end of the movie:

Maybe not, but last night’s Simpsons was awesome. I am wearing flannel and listening to Nirvana right now. If you missed it, we’ve got it saved on our DVR. Which brings up another good point, we finally have a working dvr again. It is amazing how much we missed having one considering we don’t watch that much TV.

Edit: Picture proof after the jump.
The school board had its official visit to the new Operation Center for the district, so I was on hand to turn it over and I wore my new suit. It has suspenders. I am one fancy mofo.
The operation center, as its name suggests, centralized the operations staff for the district. Now technology, transportation, buildings, grounds, and food services all share office space instead of being spread throughout the district. The building itself has a lot of storage space, a bus garage with space for five buses, three bus lifts, a truck lift, and a bus wash facility. There is also a large training room upstairs, as well as a dedicated technology area with their own storage room. There is also a nice bus driver lounge and office space for the staff.
The building is nowhere near as pretty as East High School but it is extremely functional, and I think the district will save a lot of money and time because of it. I’m proud of the building because it was kind of my baby up until June or so, when we had to focus on getting East open. [Read more →]

Really, I’m just trying to keep myself in the habit of posting.
Jenna and I went to Atonement on Tuesday night. It turns out that Tuesday is senior three dollar ticket night, so we were 40-50 years younger than the average age of the crowd. The movie was pretty good, though the protagonist is the least-redeemable character ever to be portrayed, ever. I think the best part of the night though was the preview for Young@Heart, a documentary about a choir of senior citizens who sing rock and roll songs (The Clash, James Brown, Sonic Youth, I think I heard Zeppelin…) throughout the world. I definitely will want to see that one.
Other than that, I met up with Dustin at Leopold Bro. on Friday night while Jenna and Metta went to see Bat Boy, and then we hung out at the Dwyer’s afterwards. This weekend we mostly sat around and read, as we are both reading Stephen King’s Dark Tower series. It is very engrossing – I recommend it for anyone who likes epic stories. It is not a horror novel by any means.
Well, that’s it for my lunch break.
